PGDM Internship Projects

This is written for those PGDM students who would like me to be their official faculty guide. Please note that my number is 9821046013 and my e mail is sk.palekar@spjimr.org.

INTRODUCTION

  1. First and foremost, the Institute will assign you marks for the internship project based on your rating by two different people - your guide within the company and the second is me. The purpose of this note is to tell you in advance how I will grade you.
  2. To me it is important that you keep me involved and informed throughout the project and not only at the end of the project. Please do not come to me only at the end of the project when everything is already done because then I would have had no role to play except on the dotted line. I am stating later how this needs to be done.
  3. Sometimes the companies are afraid that their confidential data may go out. Such companies may want you to sign NDA (Non-Disclousre Agreement). This is perfectly OK. But what is NOT OK is your submitting just a blank template to me at the end of the internship with no data or substance in it and ask me to rate you. It is not possible for me to rate you without any substance from your side. In that case, you need not submit a report with data to me but must show me a presentation (and take it back) so that I know what you have done.
  4. Please send me  on sk.palekar@spjimr.org , by e mail, your name, email id, cell number

PHASES IN AN INTERNSHIP PROJECT

Using the 5Ds Model (Discover, Diagnose, Design, Deploy, Deliver) you can conceptualize any project to go through these 5 steps.

First Phase is when you discover all the relevant facts (this is called secondary research or background compilation) that lead you to diagnose the objectives you need to attain and the key challenges (opportunities or problems or threats or scaling up) you need to address.

Second phase is when you create a design / plan for deploying your resources so that you can meet the challenges and achieve the objectives.

The last phase is when you monitor deliveries as they begin and learn from them and improve your design or deployment.

YOUR PROJECT

STAGE 1 : Some of you may be doing only a market research project because someone else may diagnose and design later. Some of you may be given a ready  diagnosis and you may be asked to design a new product / system. There may also be cases where even the plan is ready but the company wants you to focus only on execution (deploy and deliver). So your first mail to me should be what your project is and you and I (and your company mentor of course) need to agree on what exactly are you supposed to do.

STAGE 2 : After this is done (or you may do this concurrently also) you will need to break down your overall Stage 1 Task into smaller parts and each part should have "an earliest possible starting date" and a latest date by which the task is to be done). So your second mail to me should be on what are the sub-parts and what are their starting / ending dates so that you and I (and your company mentor of course)  agree on what are these.

AFTER STAGE 2 you may send me a weekly report on whether you are on schedule. And let me know if you have a query. You can always speak to me anytime when you want but send me an SMS an hour in advance.

LAST STAGE : You will need to meet me personally in Mumbai, after a prior appointment, when you will need to make at least a 45 minute presentation to me and answer all my questions.
